Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend a public discussion on “Sovereign AI for Somalia: Building National Digital Independence Through Artificial Intelligence,” organized by SIMAD AI Institute in collaboration with the Office of the Prime Minister.
The session highlighted an important reality: AI is no longer just a technology trend. It is becoming part of national development, economic competitiveness, innovation, education, and digital sovereignty. Countries that fail to prepare early risk being left behind in one of the fastest technological shifts of our time.
This public talk was presented by Faruq Hunter, who shared valuable insights on AI sovereignty, digital infrastructure, and the importance of building local AI capacity and long-term national digital strategy for Somalia.
What gives me optimism is that conversations around AI in Somalia are becoming more strategic and future-focused. The next step is turning these discussions into practical action through education, investment, policy development, and empowering young people with the digital skills needed for the future.
