Apple officially released iOS 27 on September 14, 2026. The update introduces a new Siri AI experience, deeper Apple Intelligence integration, AI-powered photo editing, improvements to Maps, Home, Messages, Mail and Safari, along with broader performance and system improvements. iOS 27 is available for iPhone 11 and later, as well as iPhone SE 2nd generation and later. Apple also released more than 120 security fixes as part of iOS 27.
One of the biggest changes in iOS 27 is the new Siri AI experience. Siri can now understand more natural conversations, use personal context to find information on your iPhone, and take actions across different apps — for example, finding a specific photo, locating an email, or drafting text and adjusting its tone. Siri AI can also understand what is in front of your camera, letting you ask questions about objects and scenes, and is rolling out in English first, with availability varying by language, region and device. Apple Intelligence itself now extends across writing, email, Safari and photo editing rather than living in one isolated feature, with the goal of making intelligence part of the operating system itself rather than a separate tool you open. The Photos app also gains new AI-powered editing tools, including Spatial Reframing and an upgraded Clean Up feature, making it easier to edit photos directly on the iPhone.
Apple Maps receives a major intelligence upgrade through Enhanced Flyover, combining aerial imagery with Visual Intelligence for more detailed views of locations, down to architectural features and individual trees. The Home app gains AI that can combine related activity notifications and describe HomeKit Secure Video footage, with supported cameras now able to stream and record in 4K. Parents get new tools to control which apps children can access at different times of day, alongside a redesigned Screen Time for clearer oversight. Apple also continues refining its Liquid Glass design, adding a setting to adjust its appearance from ultra clear to fully tinted, while general performance improves across app launches, Photos loading, AirDrop transfers, and Search in Spotlight, Photos and Mail, plus smoother Wi-Fi to cellular transitions via Connectivity Assist. AirPods also gain Custom EQ, and GymKit now connects iPhone to compatible cardio equipment for real time workout metrics, with AirPods Pro 3 able to track heart rate during workouts.
Beyond visible features, iOS 27 ships with more than 120 security fixes covering the kernel, WebKit, privacy, system permissions and other components, reason enough to update even without interest in the new AI features, and Apple has listed it as an official security release dated September 14, 2026. iOS 27 supports iPhone 11 through the iPhone 18 series, iPhone Air, iPhone 17e, iPhone Duo, and iPhone SE 2nd generation and later, though some features vary by model, language, region and carrier. To update, go to Settings then General then Software Update and select Download and Install if available. Altogether, iOS 27 reflects Apple integrating AI directly into the operating system rather than treating it as a standalone feature, and combined with its security and performance gains, it is a substantial update, not just a visual refresh.
